Tones on tail lion

Tones on Tail was a musical side project of Daniel Ash of the gothic rock group Bauhaus started in 1982, along with art school friend, flatmate and Bauhaus "roadie" Glenn Campling. The band's name is a reference to the way calibration tones were recorded on the "tail" of reel-to-reel tape. After the breakup of Bauhaus in 1983, they were joined by drummer Kevin Haskins, and became a full-time concern for all three members. Their music was described by one critic as "doom-and-dance-pop." The band disbanded in 1984, and Ash and Haskins went on to form Love and Rockets with former Bauhaus bassist David J.

They did one short tour of the UK and North America, and in concert, the band sported all white outfits. Their track "Go!" was one of the sample sources for Moby's "Go".

The 1998 release Everything!, is a two-CD set of every track, remastered, plus a radio interview with Ash and Haskins.

Reception

Writing for AllMusic, critic Ned Raggett said: "With their former band's generally gloomier shadows left behind, what Ash and Haskins draw from their time with Bauhaus is that group's melange of styles—their most underappreciated strength". Richard Williams of The Michigan Daily said "Tones on Tail carries on with the traditional Bauhaus taste for the macabre, but charts new courses of twisting the pop thing." James Muretich of The Calgary Herald wrote "From the ashes of Bauhaus has arisen a British trio that is turning into one of the most impressive and macabre dance bands around."

Licensing

"Go!" was used in the Beverly Hills, 90210 episode "U4EA" (the song plays while Brandon and Emily are dancing at a downtown Los Angeles rave), and in a 2008 commercial by the Ford Motor Company for their Mercury Mariner. It was also used during the class reunion disco scene in the 1997 film Grosse Point Blank, which starred John Cusack, Minnie Driver, and Dan Aykroyd, as well as in the scene in 2003 film Party Monster where Michael and company pile into a truck inside which there is a party, driven by a minor character played by Marilyn Manson. Additionally, "Go!" was used in the trailer for the second season of Rick and Morty on Adult Swim.
