Thomas Craig "Tom" Abernethy (born May 6, 1954) is a retired American professional basketball player.

Born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, Abernethy starred at St. Joseph's High School and Indiana University, the 6'7" Abernethy was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the third round of the 1976 NBA Draft. He spent five years in the league as a member of the Lakers, Golden State Warriors and Indiana Pacers. He amassed 1,779 career NBA points. In 1981 Abernethy signed for the Basket Brescia Leonessa franchise in the Italian Professional League in Europe.
Abernethy now teaches children basketball at the IBA (Indiana Basketball Academy).

Family
Abernethy's three sons all played collegiate basketball. Andy played for Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN, while his twin brother Matt played at Grace College in Winona Lake, IN. Matt won the 2003 Pete Maravich Award, presented by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Abernethy's youngest son, Todd, played for the University of Mississippi.
