Biography

Professor Tomáš Zima, MD, DSc. Dr.h.c. (1966) graduated on the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University of Prague in 1990. He has been a professor of medical chemistry and biochemistry since 2001 and Head of Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and General University Hospital Prague. He is specialist in clinical chemistry, European Specialist in Laboratory Medicine (EuSpLM). He was the Dean of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University from 2005 to 2012 and now he is the Rector of Charles University in Prague. His main research interests include oxidative stress, AGE’s, experimental nephrology, tumour markers, and laboratory management and accreditation. He is author of more than 440 articles, which is citated more than 2500 (SCI), 8 books and co-author of 71 chapters in books, H-index is 26. He put more than 130 lectures in abroad. Prof. Zima has long term teaching experience in field of biochemistry, clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine. Prof. Zima is a member in many learned and scientific societies (Czech Medical Academy, Czech Learned Society) and their Boards (e.g. member of Executive Board EFLM, member of C-CC IFCC). He is member of the European Commission's Scientific Panel for Health (SPH). He gained numerous awards in the Czech Republic and also abroad among which, “Professor Honoris Causa, State Medical University JY. Horbachevski in Ternopol, Ukraine and ESBRA Peter Berner Award (2011), doctor honoris causa – Uzzhorod National University – Ukraine Presov University – Slovakia.
