Todoroki (written: 轟 or 轟木 or 等々力) is a Japanese surname.

Origins

There appears to be more than a few variations in the surname Todoroki. The ones written either 轟 or 轟木 most likely originated in Kyushu or Shikoku, while 等々力 is common in Nagano Prefecture, particularly in Azumino city where Todoroki(等々力) exists as a place name. The majority of Japanese surnames come from place names, and Todoroki is not an exception. In Japanese, "轟く"(Todoroku) is a verb of which English translation is "rumble" or "resound", and "轟き" (or 轟) is the noun form. The word could describe the sound of water fall, cannon fire, and thunderstorm etc., but it is plausible from a geographical point of view that the place name could have a tight relationship with the sound of water fall, and thus with the surname as well.
