On December 31, 2011, in a game against the University of North Dakota, Robinson scored 30 points and grabbed 21 rebounds. He was the first Kansas player to record a 30/20 performance since Wayne Hightower scored 36 points and grabbed 21 rebounds in a 1961 game against the University of Missouri. At the end of the Big 12 conference regular season, Robinson was second in the nation with 22 double doubles behind O.D. Anosike of Siena College. At that point, Robinson averaged 18 points and 11.9 rebounds.

Prior to their game on January 22, 2011 against Texas, Kansas players, coaches and fans held a moment of silence in honor of Robinson, who had lost his grandmother, grandfather, and mother all within three weeks of one another. After the game, Kansas coach Bill Self said "For him to even be out there on the court was remarkable."

On March 4, 2012, Robinson was named the 2012 Big 12 Player of the Year. All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league’s head coaches. On March 5, 2012, he was named the Associated Press Big 12 Player of the Year.

On April 9, 2012, Robinson decided to forgo his senior season and declared for the 2012 NBA Draft.

On June 28, 2012, Robinson was drafted fifth overall in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings.

On November 7, 2012, in the 4th quarter of a game against the Detroit Pistons, Robinson hit Jonas Jerebko in the throat with an elbow, and was ejected from the game. On November 8, 2012, he was suspended for two games.

    Houston Rockets

On February 20, 2013, Robinson was traded to the Houston Rockets along with Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt in exchange for Patrick Patterson, Toney Douglas and Cole Aldrich. Robinson wore #0 for the Rockets until former Rockets guard and Kings teammate Aaron Brooks re-signed with the Rockets; Robinson switched to #41 while Brooks took his number.

    Portland Trail Blazers

On July 10, 2013, Robinson was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for the rights to Kostas Papanikolaou and Marko Todorovic, as well as two future second round draft picks. On February 23, 2014, Robinson recorded a career-high 18 rebounds along with 14 points off the bench in a win against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Robinson finished the year having appeared in 70 games, averaging 4.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in 12.5 minutes of action.

While playing in the 2014 Las Vegas summer league for the Blazers, Robinson tore a ligament in his thumb, requiring him to undergo surgery. The Blazers later declined the third-year team option on Robinson's contract, an option which would have paid him $4.7 million, subsequently making him an unrestricted free agent in 2015.

The 2014–15 season found the fan favorite Robinson consigned to the bench, buried on the depth chart by the team's off-season addition of former All-Star big man Chris Kaman. Through the middle of December, Robinson had not seen game action due to the decision of head coach Terry Stotts in 15 of the team's first two dozen contests. Robinson's opportunity came with the injury of starting center Robin Lopez, who fractured his right hand on December 15 in a win over the San Antonio Spurs. Robinson made his first career NBA start in the team's next game, a December 17 home contest against the Milwaukee Bucks, racking up 15 points, 16 rebounds, and a block in the win. Robinson was greeted with a roaring ovation from the team's faithful heading to the bench after being removed from the game for the last time in the fourth quarter. In subsequent games, Robinson was paired with Kaman off the bench, playing solid reserve minutes as power forward behind Blazer star LaMarcus Aldridge.

    Philadelphia 76ers

On February 19, 2015, Robinson was traded, along with Will Barton, Victor Claver and a lottery-protected 2016 first-round pick, to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Arron Afflalo and Alonzo Gee. Three days later, he was waived by the Nuggets before playing in a game for them.

On February 24, 2015, Robinson was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia 76ers. The next day, he made his debut for the 76ers, recording 7 points and 6 rebounds in the 88-104 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

    Brooklyn Nets

On July 9, 2015, Robinson signed a two-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets. He made his debut for the Nets in the team's season opener against the Chicago Bulls on October 28, recording 4 points and 5 rebounds off the bench in a 115–100 loss.
