Thomas R. "Tom" Nides (b. ca. 1961) is the former United States Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, having assumed that office on January 3, 2011 and departed office to become Vice Chairman of Morgan Stanley.

Biography

Thomas R. Nides was born to a Jewish family in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Shirley (nee Gavronsky) and Arnold Richard Nides. His father was the founder of Nides Finance, a national consumer finance company, and president of Temple Israel and the Duluth Jewish Federation. He was educated at the University of Minnesota.

From 1986 to 1989, Nides was chief of staff of Rep. Tony Coelho (D—CA-15). He was a key staff member for Speaker Tom Foley (D—WA-5) from 1989 to 1993, and in 1994, he served as chief of staff of United States Trade Representative Mickey Kantor.

Nides joined Fannie Mae as Senior Vice President of Human Resources in 1998, holding this position until 2001. He was then Chief Administrative Officer of Credit Suisse USA from 2001 to 2004. From 2005 to 2010, he was Chief Operating Officer of Morgan Stanley.

President of the United States Barack Obama nominated Nides to be Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources on September 29, 2010. He was confirmed by the Senate on December 22, 2010, and sworn into office on January 3, 2011.

Personal life

In 1992, he married Virginia Carpenter Moseley. Mosley is the Washington Deputy Bureau Chief and Vice President for CNN.
