Thrirmakkottai (Thirumai) is a village in Mannargudi municipality in Thiruvarur district (formerly part of Thanjavur district) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The village is 16 km away from Mannargudi in south direction and 19 km from Pattukkottai in north-east direction. Having good communication and well connected with both the towns. The nearest railway station is 16 km away at Mannargudi.

Geography

Thirumakkottai is located at . It has an average elevation of 6 metres (19 feet).

Economy

Being an agricultural village, Thirumakkottai's economy largely depends on the income from agriculture. The crops cultivated include rice, cotton, sugarcane, and pulses like urad and mung bean. The agriculture around this area mainly depends on the rivers Koraiyaru, Mullaiyar, Pamaniyar. Other sources of irrigation are bore-wells. Almost one from family migrated to Vietnam and Singapore during 1900 onward for earning. There is Hydro Electric Power Plant in this Village. which supplies electricity to nearby districts.

Temples

The place was once a forest of Paarijatha trees which is endemic flower plants having sweet-smelling. This Village is surrounding with Temples and Tanks. Important temple is Sree Gnanapureeshwarar temple which is a vast temple complex with more-than-1000-year-old history. Gnanapureeshwar - This word dedicated to Lord Siva. 'Thirikulam' a tank situated opposite to this temple is famous for curing 'Ven Kushtam' i.e. white leprosy.

The temple was built by the Chola King Kiruthasekaran, probably in 903 B.C. He kept Thirumakkottai as his capital. The famous of this temple is the deity is surrounded by 16 Vinayagar (Pillaiyar) in different locations and positions. This is only one place in the world such a divine setup established. This village is related to history of Ramayana. History says, Sri Rama visited this village to meet his guru (master) Rishi Vasistha while travelling to Lanka to get Sita back.

Other than this Siva temple, another big and famous temple is 'Perumal Kovil' and the main deity is 'Renganathar' with his concert 'Renganayagi' thayar. In addition there are lot of village Goddess temples like Maariyamman temple, Ponniyamman temple.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Thirumakkottai had a population of around 10000. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Thirumakkottai has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 74%. In Thirumakkottai, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The entire village belongs to one community namely Agamudaiyar (Devar) and all of them are relatives also. In the adjacent area of Maharajapuram and Perumal Kovil Natham (both place falls under Thirumakkottai Panchayat) the Kallars are living. In later period Muslims migrated to this village for doing trade and their population is now considerably increased and they are spread over Bazaar area. The bazaar is mainly dealing with consumer durable businesses, but most of the people prepare to visit nearby town Mannargudi or Pattukottai.

It is self-contained village, because apart from Devars, goldsmiths, barbars, nathaswaram vidhuvans, laborers, dobbys, are also living to fulfill the day today requirements.

The village has well organized 'Grama Sabha Committee'. It maintain the property belong to the village and taking care of development of the village.

Education

ARJ engineering college, which is situated around 10 km from Thirumakkottai on the road to Mannargudi. STET women's college is nearby women college where students from nearby towns are studying.

ARJ engineering College group, Now also have started ARJ polytechnic college .

Govt schools in levels primary, higher secondary and one women schools are available in this village and studying more than 1000 students from in and around of this village.

G T Power Plant

A Gas Turbine power plant is commissioned at Thirumakkottai by the TNEB; this plant has a capacity of 107 MW.
