Analysis

White apple tree holds a special place in the history of Lithuanian art as part of the best landscapes. Presented for the first time in 1932. Though young at the time, Antanas Samuolis showed maturity in his work. The main focus of the picture is aimed at apple tree that is central to it, highlighted by its lighter color. The woman bent over a barrel, a dog and several buildings are of secondary importance in the picture. Expressionism is represented by crooked trunk of the tree, hunched woman and uneven plowed farmland. The scene, which is presented contains the poetic mood of loneliness and sadness. The scenery is authentic, it is assumed that the apple tree is in the family garden of the artist. The picture contains autobiographical aspect, alluding to the hard life of the artist, suffering from ill health and financial difficulties.
