Origins

The Michigan Church was organized into a formal Church of the Lord Our Righteousness group in 1948 under the leadership of Albert "Pa" Begeman. The majority of the church membership in Michigan consisted mostly of the family of Albert and Clara Begeman and their seven children who were married with children of their own. This small band of believers formed the foundation for what came to be called a small but mighty church. Albert Begeman was always looking for other believers who kept the Sabbath and met a lot of different folks around the area and parts beyond. In this way, we were exposed to many interesting people and ideas.

First COLOR Camp

In 1948 David and Ruth Charles went out to Auburn, Washington with Richard and Laura Cooke and attended a youth camp already well established there. They started to dream of one in the east where children there could attend. They enlisted the men in their own area to dream their dream. A committee was formed (David Charles from Michigan, Oliver Rowe from Quincy, Ohio, Joe Vasil from Kent, Ohio, and Richard Cooke and Don Hepburn from Washington, D.C.) to start a youth camp!

Plans started-a campsite had to be located and a staff enlisted and finances finally came together in 1951. The place was Mountain Lake, Bellefontaine, Ohio. F.P. Rowe promised to underwrite the expenses in case the project went in the red. Elder Walter Wilkinson's talent to teach and present the gospel to young people kept the committee motivated to push ahead with the plans. Little did these men know what they were starting. We owe them such a debt of gratitude for their efforts and having this vision. Many times first steps are taken without even fully realizing the many lives that will be touched through the years. Camp meeting (adult sermons, singing with fellowship and dinner on the grounds) and camp net there at Mountain Lake for three years and in 1954 was moved to Camp Cussewago in Erie, Pennsylvania. That was a central location but not an ideal place so the search moved to Michigan. David Charles found a suitable place for youth camp in Ludington, MI at a state owned outdoor center. It was not suitable for camp meeting as it was not central enough so the decision was made to separate the two events. The church moved to having weekend retreats to fill their need for camp meetings and eventually a youth camp in Winchester, Virginia was organized for the eastern kids. That location was on Elder Richard Cooke's property called Wingfield on the Shenandoah River. Four years of wonderful youth camps were held there, along with several weekend retreats. (Eventually the constitution for the current church would be written over several weekends at Wingfield.) A number of the folks from Michigan went to the camp in Winchester to help out as did the folks in the east and Ohio attend the camps in Michigan. A wonderful spirit of togetherness was experienced at these camps and retreats.
