Incidents in Jonesborough during the Troubles:

1978

  • 17 February 1978 - Ian Corden-Lloyd (39), member of the British Army was killed when the Gazelle helicopter in which he was travelling crashed, shortly after having been hit by gunfire from a Provisional IRA unit, near Jonesborough, County Armagh. The IRA claimed to have shot down the helicopter, a claim denied by the Army for years, until finally acknowledging that the IRA had indeed caused the crash.

  • 20 March 1989 - Robert Buchanan (55) and Harry Breen (51), both Protestant members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, were shot dead by the Provisional Irish Republican Army, while travelling in Buchanan's car, near Jonesborough. See also Smithwick Tribunal.
