Zack (Trevor Lissauer) is the new kid in town who makes the discovery of his life: a talking, wisecracking magical skateboard named Rip (voiced by Dom Deluise).

The Skateboard Kid Skateboard Kid The Comedy Fantasy Family

The film opens with a crew of skateboarders led by Ham (Jonathan Pekar) who skate over to the local chicken wing restaurant to cause a little mischief. One of the members of Ham's crew hooks a spool up to the back of a police car that belongs to the Sheriff (Lee McLaughlin). Ham goes up to the chicken mascot (who was advertising the chicken wings) and steals its head. Seeing this, Sheriff tries to start his car but the spool coasts down the hill and crashes into the rear bumper.

The film cuts to a beach sidewalk in California where Zack and his buddies are skating. A car with a UHAUL box strapped to the roof pulls into the parking lot. The car is driven by Zack's father Frank (Timothy Busfield) who honks the horn. It's revealed that Zack and his dad are moving. Zack waves goodbye to his friends and hops into the car. While driving to their new hometown, Frank's car was surrounded by Ham's crew. Frank was trying to read the map that he has but then realizes that he has the wrong map. Ham (who was wearing the chicken head that he stole) goes in front of the car. Zack tells his dad to hit the brakes but Ham gets hit by the car. Zack, Frank and the other skaters crowded around Ham. Zack asks why did Ham had to cross the road like that to which Burger (Lee Velazquez) replies "To get to the other side you barney" (a reference to the joke). Ham cluckes like a chicken and gets up. Frank, realizing it was a prank, asks for directions after Zack tells Ham that he was laughing until Ham took the chicken head off causing Ham's crew to act like they didn't expect that. Ham and the others, including Snake (Kai Lennox), act as if they ever heard of Mill Creak. While they were doing that, a member of Ham's crew loosens the UHAUL box. After they leave Zack and Frank behind, Zack and his dad get back into their car. But when Frank turned the car right, the UHAUL box that was loosened earlier flies off into the dirt. The movie follows Zack and his father adjusting to life in Mill Creek, with his dad helping film a commercial for a local car dealership.

The film then transitions to Ham's crew bullying Jenny by withholding her bike from her, until Zack comes by on his skateboard and accidentally knocks into Ham which knocks him down. Ham, the antagonist at this point, snaps at Zack and promises to pay him back or something slightly threatening. Zack runs away from the skateboard gang and ends up at a used-car lot where his dad is filming a commercial for the owner, Big Dan Tanner, and Ham frames Zack by knocking over a scarecrow like set of dominoes. It's revealed that Ham is Big Dan's son. After that incident, Sally (the man who sprayed water on Big Dan) picked up Zack and takes him to the house. Sally then nearly trips over Zack's skateboard and literally punches it in half. As Zack stares at his now broken skateboard, Maggie comes out of the house and talks to Zack. It turns out that Maggie is Jenny's mother. Zack then helps Maggie with a little housecleaning while Maggie talks to a construction worker talking about the electricity in her house. Then Maggie gives Zack an old skateboard.

The movie ends with Frank marrying Maggie and Dan being down in the dumps.

During the credits, Trashkittens perform their song "Hard to Find".
