The Second Saint Petersburg Gymnasium is one of the oldest schools in Saint Petersburg. It was founded in 1805 by Emperor Alexander I. The Gymnasium is located in the Admiralteysky District of Saint Petersburg.

The staff of the Gymnasium consists of 1357 students and 133 teachers.

Apart from the basic disciplines, the school provides an opportunity of extensive English learning. Moreover, students can choose the second foreign language to learn: German or French. The students also attend lessons of computer science, rhetoric, dancing, logic etc.

Many of students are participants of all kinds of the city, national and international Olympiads, contests, conferences and competitions. There is a big number of prize winners among them.

The gymnasium is usually involved in international projects such as the MUN project with its annual international conferences, the Russian-Finnish project “ICT-based Education as a Driver of Change in Learning”, the International Science Olympiad and others; cultural exchange programmes, international festivals and competitions.

Russian Empire

1805 - on September 7th St. Petersburg provincial gymnasium was opened; September 9th classes began.

1822 - the Gymnasium was renamed into the Graduate School, keeping the same students and staying in the same place. The school given some benefits. Certificates issued by the school had the same effect as from the university in the production of the higher grades.

1830 - the school received the name of the Gymnasium.

1883 - on June 11th the ceremony of laying of the gymnasium church took place.

1905 - on September 7th, in honor of the 100th anniversary, the Gymnasium was given the name of the Emperor Alexander I, in whose reign it was founded.

1917 - after the renaming of St. Petersburg to Petrograd the Gymnasium was renamed the Petrograd Second Gymnasium.

After 1917

1918 - the Second Gymnasium was renamed to the 1st Unified Labor School of the Kazansky district.

1920 - 1st Unified Labor School of the Kazansky district became known as the 17th Soviet Unified Labor School. The school began to teach not only boys but also girls.

1923 - The 17th Soviet Unified Labor School was renamed into the 37th Soviet Unified Labor School.

1933 - The 37th Soviet Unified Labor School received the status of the First School of the Oktyabrsky district.

1941-1945 years - during the Great Patriotic War there was a hospital in the school building. The school itself was transferred to the school building number 239. After the war, the school returned to the street Plekhanov and was renamed into the 232th Middle-aged Male School of the Oktyabrsky district .

1962 - on September 1st the Oktyabrsky District School became known as the Secondary School № 232 with in-depth study of English.

1990 - from the September 1st, the school was renamed to the School-gymnasium № 232 of the Oktyabrsky district of Leningrad.

1991 - the historical name "the Second St Petersburg Gymnasium" was returned on February 1st.

2005 - on September 5th, the first gymnasium Olympic Games were performed.

2008 - on September 1st at the Kazan street, 48 the new building of the primary school was opened.
