The Marketplace Mall is managed by Wilmorite and located in the heart of the Rochester, New York metropolitan area on Hylan Drive, in the suburb of Henrietta.

The Marketplace Mall opened on October 7, 1982 as the largest mall and the first regional mall located between New York City and Cleveland. On opening day, The Marketplace was anchored by Sibley's, McCurdy's, B. Forman Co. and Sears and was home to 140 specialty retailers. In February 1983, J.C. Penney opened as the fifth department store. At the time of opening, Marketplace was 1/3 larger than Eastview Mall. Since 1982 four out parcels have been added to the property. In 2001, an 84,000 sq ft (7,800 m2). Galyan’s was added onto the south side of the mall, which was converted to a Dick's Sporting Goods in 2004. In 2006, Kaufmann’s parent company The May Department Stores Company was bought out by Federated Department Stores and the next year Kaufmann's became a Macy’s.

The Marketplace was the fourth shopping center to open in the Rochester, NY Market behind Midtown Plaza, Greece Ridge Mall and Eastview Mall. It was the second major retail shopping center to open in Henrietta following Southtown Plaza. The area surrounding the mall, which was previously farmland, has been developed both commercially and residentially over the past twenty years. There are five parcels totaling 80 acres (320,000 m2) available for future development located adjacent to the Marketplace Commons. Marketplace Commons was developed and built by Wilmorite and located next to the Marketplace Mall. The retail tenants there include: Lowe's Home Improvement, Target, Babies R Us, and Best Buy.

In 2014, The Bon-Ton closed at the mall. It was replaced by Pole Position Raceway, an indoor go-kart track in October 2014. Field & Stream also opened in October 2014, and it was announced in July 2015 that in early 2016, Dave & Buster's will be opening in the former Bon Ton wing. On June 1, 2016, Wilmorite announced that the Marketplace Mall will be converted to an indoor outlet mall called Marketplace Outlets, and will reopen in Fall 2017 On January 4, 2017, Macy's announced that they would be closing its Marketplace Mall location a part of a plan to close 68 stores as part of approximately 100 stores Macy's announced on August 11, 2016.
