The Last Descent is a 2016 biographical survival drama film written and directed by Isaac Halasima, and is his first feature-length film. It is based on the 2009 rescue attempt of John Edward Jones in Nutty Putty Cave, west of Utah Lake. The film was produced by Deep Blue Films, Cocollala Pictures, and Dark Rider Productions and distributed by Excel Entertainment Group.

Plot

John Jones, a 26-year-old medical student and experienced caver, explores an un-mapped section of the famous Nutty Putty Cave on November 25, 2009. After John becomes stuck in a hole 18 inches wide and 150 feet under ground, rescue crews work frantically and heroically to free him. Throughout the ordeal, John relies on his love for his wife Emily and their infant daughter Lizzie to keep himself motivated, and develops a connection with a rescuer named Aaron who vows to free John from the cave. The story focus on themes of love, loss and faith.

The film was shot in Utah. Chadwick Hopson and Alexis Johnson, who play John Jones and Emily Jones respectively, spent time with Jones' surviving family during filming in order to better understand the incident and the people involved.
