The Alive and the Dead (Russian: Живые и мёртвые) is a 1964 Soviet film directed by Aleksandr Stolper based on the eponymous 1959 novel The Living and the Dead by Konstantin Simonov.

Plot

The film takes place in a time warp from the first days of the Great Patriotic War and until the middle of the winter of 1941-1942, before the beginning of the Soviet counterattack near Moscow. While on vacation Army military newspaper correspondent Ivan Sintsov (Kirill Lavrov) from the beginning of the war he returned to his unit, located in Belarus. However, access to the part it is not possible, in the first days under the onslaught of Soviet troops retreating Wehrmacht. Instead, it gets its part of the assembly point in the town of Borisov. There he was sent to the headquarters with another officer. They go out on the road at a distance from each other to vote and trucks to get to Orsha. But this time, the German air force swooped and his companion and the car he had just stopped, carries the bomb explosion. Sintsov falls into another military newspaper, located in Mogilev, and then in two environments - at Mogilev in July and Yelnia in October 1941.
