Career

Tessa Souter was born in London to a Trinidadian father and an English mother. When she was eight, she took lessons in piano and voice. At twelve, she taught herself how to play guitar, and she performed for her friends. She left home when she was sixteen, got married, had a child, and then got divorced. She attended college while a neighbor babysat her child. After college, she worked as an editorial assistant and copy editor at Parents magazine, then became a freelance writer. She married a second time and divorced.

Souter flew to the U.S. and decided to stay. She found work as a freelance writer and cleaned houses. A boyfriend suggested she take up singing, and she began to visit open-mike nights at bars and clubs. She became interested in jazz and wrote lyrics to jazz compositions.
