History

The precursor to the fair was the Appalachian Exposition of 1910, organized by regional businessmen and editors, which was repeated in 1911 and in 1913 (as the National Conservation Exposition). The first fair in the present pattern was the East Tennessee Division Fair in 1916. The fair was later recharted as a non-profit organization and renamed the Tennessee Valley Agriculture and Industrial Fair in 1932. Knoxville received the honor of hosting the 1982 World's Fair, in which many demonstrations took place. Several stores in Downtown Knoxville also participated.
