Route description

SR 186 starts at U.S. Route 45W (US 45W) slightly southeast of downtown Trenton and is known as Gibson Highway. It continues southeast towards the town of Gibson and crosses US 79 and US 70A. (It is known as Main Street in Gibson). From here, it continues south into Madison County and has an intersection with US 45E near the town of Three Way. This portion is a two-lane rural highway.

It continues for a short distance with US 45E until both interchange with US 45W and US 45. Afterwards, it continues south with US 45 for about 1 mile (1.6 km) and continues with US 45 Bypass while US 45 branches off toward the east as Highland Street. SR 186 follows US 45 Bypass (also known as the Keith Short Bypass) around the western side of the city of Jackson and ends in the downtown area, as does US 45 Bypass when it intersects with US 45. The portion of SR 186 from Three Way to Downtown Jackson is unsigned.

Future

The city of Jackson along with TDOT is planning on re-routing SR 186 (along with US 45 Bypass) away from downtown. Under the current plans, it would extend the bypass south across the Forked Deer River and connect it with US 45 in South Jackson. It would route through traffic away from the central business district and give another crossing for South Jackson commuters.
