The tenebrous worm first appeared in first edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons under the "worm" heading in the original Monster Manual II (1983).
The tenebrous worm appeared in the second edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons under the "worm" heading in Monstrous Compendium Volume Two (1989), and under the "gloomwing" entry in the Monstrous Manual (1993).
Description
A tenebrous worm is the larval form of the gloomwing. A tenebrous worm is an insectoid predator that inhabits the Plane of Shadows, and seeks warm-blooded prey. A tenebrous worm's head is equipped with powerful mandibles that drip a highly caustic acid secreted from glands located behind the creature's multi-faceted eyes. A tenebrous worm looks like a huge, partially bare caterpillar. The front section of the body is covered with lusterless black bristles, while the hind parts are a wet, nauseating grey. The many facets of the creature's eyes reflect the half-light of the Plane of Shadows with a luminous gillmer. This glimmer is the only warning of a tenebrous worm's presence. Its small, black legs allow it to move rapidly. Its great maw is flanked by its huge, pearly mandibles.
