When John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) was a little boy, he made a wish that Ted (Seth MacFarlane), his beloved teddy bear, would come alive. The first film, Ted was released on June 29, 2012 and the second, Ted 2 was released on June 26, 2015.

Life has changed drastically for thunder buddies John (Wahlberg), now a bachelor, and best pal Ted (MacFarlane), now married to the woman of his dreams. Problems arise when the couple decide to adopt a child, but the law declares Ted to be property and not a person. Angry and dejected, the lovably foulmouthed teddy bear must now seek legal help from a young lawyer Samantha Jackson (Amanda Seyfried) and a legendary, civil-rights attorney Patrick Meighan (Morgan Freeman) to get the justice he deserves.

Seth MacFarlanes directorial debut is a live-action effort, with computer animation handled by visual effects facilities Tippett Studio and Iloura. MacFarlane wrote the screenplay with his Family Guy colleagues Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild. Filming began in May 2011 in Boston, Norwood, Swampscott, and Chelsea all in Massachusetts. The films North American release was scheduled for July 13, 2012, but it was pulled back to June 29, both to avoid competition with Ice Age: Continental Drift and following the delay of G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The film was released in Australia on July 5, 2012, and on August 1, 2012 in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

In a "behind the scenes" video, it was revealed that MacFarlane originally wanted to make Ted into an animated TV show, much like his previous works Family Guy and American Dad!.

During the 2012 American Dad! Comic-Con panel, MacFarlane stated that he would be open to a sequel to Ted. In September 2012, chief executive Steve Burke said that the studio would be looking to make a sequel to Ted "as soon as possible". In January 2013, on Anderson Live, Wahlberg confirmed that a sequel was in the works and that it would be the first sequel in his career, while also revealing that he and Ted (as voiced by MacFarlane) would appear at the 85th Academy Awards. On October 2, 2013, it was announced Ted 2 would be released on June 26, 2015. On February 14, 2014, Amanda Seyfried was cast as the female lead. On June 17, 2014, Jessica Barth was confirmed to reprise her role as Tami-Lynn. In August and September 2014, it was announced that Patrick Warburton would return as Johns co-worker Guy, and that Morgan Freeman, Principal photography began on July 28, 2014, and ended on November 13, 2014.

The websites consensus reads, "Teds "romance versus bromance" plot is familiar, but the films held aloft by the high-concept central premise and a very funny (albeit inconsistent) script." At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted mean rating from mainstream critics, the film received a score of 62 out of 100, based on 37 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".

Ted 2 has received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 47%, based on 111 reviews, with an average rating of 5.2/10. The sites critical consensus reads, "Ted 2 reunites Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane for another round of sophomoric, scatological humor — and just as before, your enjoyment will depend on your tolerance for all of the above." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 49 out of 100, based on 35 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". In CinemaScore polls, cinema audiences gave Ted 2 an average score of "B+" on an A+ to F scale in contrast to the A- earned by its predecessor.
