Ministry

Te Tai Rāwhiti is one of 5 Hui Amorangi (episcopal units) that comprise Te Pīhopatanga o Aotearoa. There are 4 rohe (ministry units) within Te Tai Rāwhiti:

  • Ngāti Porou
  • Turanga-Whangara
  • Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa
  • Te Matau a Maui - Waipawa
  • Parishes

Te Tai Rāwhiti has around 30 parishes (pariha) spread across four rohe.

The Hui Amorangi is also home to two Māori Anglican boarding schools, Te Aute College and Hukarere Girls’ College.

    William Brown Turei

Brown Turei was elected as the first Pihopa ki te Tai Rāwhiti (Bishop of Te Tai Rāwhiti) in 1992. Turei was also Te Pihopa o Aotearoa (Head of the Māori Anglican Church) and Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa-New Zealand and Polynesia. It was announced that Turei was to retire as Bishop of Tairawhiti on 31 December and as Moari archbishop on 31 March. However, Turei passed away in January of 2017 after a brief illness.

    Donald Steven Tamihere

Don Tamihere was elected to succeed Archbishop Brown Turei at an electoral synod held at the Toko Toru Tapu Church, Manutuke in 2016 following the announcement of Turei's retirement earlier in the year.

Tamihere was ordained and installed as the second bishop of Tairawhiti at a service held at Waiomatatini (Porourangi) Marae, Ruatoria on March 11 2017. He was formally the Principal of Te Rau College, the diocesan Theological Collge responsible for training and equipping lay leaders and clergy for ministry and mission within the diocese.

The Amorangi Administrator is Andrew Tamihere, in charge of all Amorangi administration, fiscal performance, and general management for the Tairawhiti Trust Board.

Each of the Rohe in Tairawhiti is led by a senior priest known as a Minita-a-Rohe. They are as follows:

  • Ngati Porou - Rev Canon Morehu Te Maro
  • Turanga-Whangara - Vacant (formerly Rev Canon Bill Tuhiwai; a new Minita-a-Rohe will be elected by clergy in the near future)
  • Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa - Vacant (a collective approach to ministry is taking place in Wairoa, with individual parish priests representing the interests of their congregations)
  • Matau a Maui - Rev Numia Tomoana
  • Waipawa - Rev John Flavell
  • Te Rau Theological College is the official diocesan training centre for laity and clergy. Te Rau College also offers a Diploma in Anglican Studies in conjunction with the College of St. John the Evangelist.

Isaac Beach is the diocesan Youth Enabler coordinating youth ministry from Wharekahika in the North, to Woodville in the South.

Te Hui Amorangi has a Trust Board which oversees its land, buildings, and assets. Members are as follows:

  • Godfrey Pohatu (Chair)
  • Maui Tangohau (Secretary/Treasurer)
  • Herewini Parata
  • Archbishop Brown Turei
  • Rev Mona Scott
