Taynish Biosphere Reserve is a biosphere reserve located in south-west Scotland on the coast of Argyll, represents native mixed woodland, with wet and dry heath, grassland, and coastal ecosystems.
There is grazing of beef cattle and sheep in land adjacent and near to the biosphere reserve, with some controlled grazing carried out within the area. In the wider area, there is considerable coniferous forestry development, and fishing (including creels) and fish farming in the lochs. Natural harbours, such as Crinan, form a base for small-scale commercial boat trips and local and visiting private craft. The area has a significant amenity value to tourists.
Monitoring and research projects is a primary objective of the area’s management plan. A resource pack is issued to all local schools to encourage use of the area. A training service is provided for primary school teachers to encourage self sufficiency when using the biosphere reserve as a resource. Other training has been provided for specialists and land managers, forestry, and reserve staff.
Proposals made in the periodic review for extending this reserve to meet the Seville criteria are being considered.
