In a document dating from the 16th century, the area near this estate was known as Andar tal-Misilmin (land of the Muslim), a reference to the Islamic presence in Malta. In the Middle Ages the southeast of Malta was populated with more Muslims than the rest of the island.

In 1993, a punic temple was found in the area under the main road that passes through the outskirts of Żejtun, Tarxien, Santa Luċija, Għaxaq and Bir id-Deheb. In 2008, a punic cemetery was discovered in a field between Tal-Barrani Road and Tal-Hotba Road (Bulebel). This site is earmarked for the construction of the new St. James Hospital for the south of Malta.

Tal-Barrani was the site of political violence on 30 November 1986, when Eddie Fenech Adami had permission to hold a mass meeting which resulted in violence.
