History
The company is a subsidiary of Chesterfield, Missouri-based Cat5 Commerce, and accounts for about sixty percent of Cat5’s revenue. Cat5’s first web property was BDU.com, which sold military gear online, founded in 2004 by Chad Weinman. Weinman serves as the current CEO of TacticalGear.com. TacticalGear.com was founded in February 2011, along with an industry blog.
Merchandise
TacticalGear.com sells tactical gear, but does not sell firearms. TacticalGear.com’s main client base consists of police forces and overseas combat troops who are looking to augment their arsenal. The site also sells its items to hobbyists and collectors. It sells clothing, footwear, equipment, uniforms, and firearms accessories such as sights and holsters.
Controversies
In 2012, the company was involved in a public relations mishap after it sold James Eagan Holmes the armor used during a mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado, which left 12 people dead and 70 others wounded. The company received threatening communications following the incident. In addition to those who blamed it for aiding in the massacre, it also was attacked by gun rights supporters who criticized it for issuing a statement denying having sold weapons to Holmes.
