TD Power Systems Limited is a manufacturer of Synchronous generators or Alternators. The Company’s products are in the output range of 1 megawatt to 200 megawatts for prime movers, such as steam turbines, gas turbines, hydro turbines, diesel engines, gas and wind turbines. TDPS has also entered in the business of manufacturing traction alternators for Indian Railways and international counterparts. The Company’s services include support for erection and commissioning, training for customer field technicians on commissioning, maintenance and trouble-shooting to control generation disruptions, periodic plant health check up, overhauling of generators and replacement of generators. The Company also manufactures special application generators for Geo thermal and Solar thermal applications. TDPS main focus is on manufacturing custom-designed generators for its customers. The company was incorporated in 1999 and is based in Bengaluru, India. It has currently 3000+ installed alternaltors running successfully all over the world.

Key Events & Milestones

TDPS signed a long-term license agreement with Siemens AG. Under this agreement, TDPS will receive from Siemens, the know-how/ technology transfer for manufacture of industrial, air-cooled, 2-pole AC generators in the range of 74 MVA to 250 MVA (59 MW to 200 MW) in India. This agreement enhanced the ability to produce the latest generation machines from the Siemens product range. This enriched the company, a track record of successfully absorbing new technologies for manufacturing generators and entered into agreements with several international power equipment manufacturers.

TDPS signed a production technology agreement with SICME-MOTORI ITALY in 2009 for PMG type wind generators. This was the start of a long and successful journey for TDPS with its first variant. Special facilities were established to maintain the same and under this technology, more than 74 generators were manufactured for Winwind Power Energy Private Limited.

TDPS signed a Product Development Cooperation and Manufacturing Agreement with Voith Hydro Holding GmbH for jointly developing electrical generators.

The Company made few healthy alliances in order to establish themselves in the International Market. Few noticeable events are the collaboration with International Power Supplier, Italy & collaboration with Karsten Moholt AS, an electrical consultant from Norwegian region.

Company Structure, Products & Services

Up to 2015 TDPS operated in two main business areas: Projects Business & Generator Business. Following the market share, company decided to converge its entire focus on Generator Business.

Steam Turbine Generators

TDPS manufacture generators up to 200 MW for steam turbine applications. The company has its own technology for generators up to 55 MW. Additionally, license agreement with Siemens allowed TDPS to extend its range from 55 MW to 200MW. Steam turbine driven generators are turbo generators/high-speed machines with a running speed of 1500rpm/ 1800rpm/ 3000rpm/ 3600rpm. This application would require specialized rotor designs to cater to large stresses induced due to high centrifugal forces. The manufacturing process for steam turbine generators requires precision components and assembly techniques. Generally, steam turbine driven generators are used for base load application. In most power plants, these generators are connected to the grid where excess power beyond the requirement of base load is exported to the grid. In most cases, these generators cater to the entire power requirement of a manufacturing facility. Steam turbine generators are used extensively in cement, sugar, steel, paper, chemicals and other industries.

Hydro Turbine Generators

In case of hydro turbine generators, the performance requirements will be unique depending on the type of hydro turbine, grid and powerhouse conditions. Hydro turbine driven generators have a running speed in the range of 187rpm to 1800rpm. Generally, these machines are located in remote places where accessibility is very poor and due to such conditions, there is a requirement for high reliability.Further, in case of weak grid conditions, they would require generators to be specially designed for high inertia requirements to absorb frequent tripping and should further have a rugged design to transfer all the forces to foundation smoothly. The rotor assembly requires specialized design, assembly and balance to operate at high runaway speeds. TDPS caters generators for all the major types of Hydro Turbines namely Francis Turbines, Kaplan Turbines & Pelton Turbines. Each of these three turbines has different design requirements with respect to the generators.

Diesel Engine Generators

Diesel engine generators are used for peak load demands and also find wide application in critical installations like emergency/back up power plants in hospitals, airports and manufacturing plants involving critical processes. These generators are being procured by set builders for installation across various industries such as international airports and satellite research centers, data server farms and process industries. Diesel engine driven generators have a running speed in the range of 187rpm to 1800rpm. In case of diesel engine generators, the reciprocating engine transfers very high cyclic loads to the generator resulting in high vibrations. These vibrations are required to be effectively absorbed by the generator, which further requires special designs for rotor dynamics and specialized stator parts. So special torsional study has been developed to ensure that the generator operating frequency does not match with any other system frequency thereby avoiding high stresses to the machinery. TDPS manufacture generators with output range up to 20 MW. TDPS generators are coupled with some of the major international engine brands like Caterpillar, Wartsila, Perkins & Mitsubishi.

Gas Engine Generators

Gas engine driven generators are similarly designed to diesel engine generators. The emphasis on green energy is the driving factor in developing generators up to 20MW for this application. TDPS has its own in-house technology for developing these generators. Gas engine generators also need stringent design requirements which have to accommodate high vibrations arising from the reciprocating mechanics involved.

Gas Turbine Generators

Gas turbine driven generators are also high-speed special designs and are compact in size. They are high-efficiency systems which find major application in oil and gas industries. TDPS manufacture generators up to 200MW for this application.

Wind Turbine Generators

The company has dedicated state of art, manufacturing facility and test set up for Wind turbine generators are able to deliver high-quality products with quick lead times. TDPS offers three solutions for the wind turbine segment, built as per customer requirement in compliance with all global standards.

  • Permanent Magnet Generators
  • Synchronous generators
  • Doubly fed Induction Generators
  • Permanent Magnet Generators – TDPS signed a production technology agreement with SICME-MOTORI ITALY in 2009 for PMG type wind generators. This was the start of a long and successful journey for TDPS with its first variant. Rare earth magnets used to build the PMG type generators have to be assembled under strict supervision to ensure zero ingression of dust and ferrous particles. Special facilities have been established to maintain the same and under this technology, more than 74 generators have been manufactured for Winwind Power Energy Private Limited.

Synchronous generators – TDPS designed and launched the synchronous type wind generators, its second variant to the market in early 2013 for high-speed turbine application. These generators have received wide acceptability in the market. Under this technology, Kenersys has ordered a large number of generators.

Doubly fed Induction Generators – In 2014 TDPS launched a new series of DFIG type wind turbine generators. Major customers for these machines are GE Wind and Nu Power Technologies.

    Facility

TDPS has two manufacturing units – Unit 1 comprising 156,227 sqft built-up on 6. 22 acres and Unit 2 comprising 317,352 sqft built-up on 25 acres and are ISO 9001:2008 compliant. TDPS houses a precision machine shop that can machine large components to very close tolerances, a sophisticated coil shop with automation and cutting edge quality control equipment to accurately measure process standards. It owns a large Co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) to accurately measure dimensions of components up to sizes of 3 meters on x-axis, 6 meters on y-axis and 2.8 meters on z-axis with a least count of zero point one micron.

Process equipment's like automatic coil taping machines, automatic coil spreading machines, modern GVPI plants for stator and rotor impregnation, high precision rotor coil brazing set up, balancing machines to balance rotors at rated speed, coil manipulator for handling stator coils etc. are up to renowned global standards.
