Career

Born to a musical family, her father, Don Ippolito, was a jazz pianist and arranger who wrote for big bands in the U.S. Army during World War II and toured with Buddy Rich and Stan Getz. Her mother, Johanna Dordick, was an opera singer who founded the Los Angeles Opera Theatre in Los Angeles. A classically trained actress, Brooks studied at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

She played Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street at the Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, Texas, and the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Washington and has acted on television in Designing Women, Dallas, Mama & Son, Baywatch, Beverly Hills 90210, and was featured on the Guns N' Roses video "Patience".

Her debut album, Dangerous Liaisons, was released in 2010 with songs from the Great American Songbook and arrangements by Tom Gavin and Kim Richmond.

Her second album, Restless, released in May 2012, was a collaboration with Kim Richmond and Rich Eames exploring the darker side of jazz she calls "jazz noir".

The Arrangement, Sylvia Brooks's third album, was released in May of 2017 and features the work of five arrangers, Christian Jacob, Otmaro Ruíz, Jeff Colella, Quinn Johnson, and Kim Richmond, as well as three original songs written by Brooks, including "Sweet Surrender", co-written with Christian Jacob, "What Was I Thinking (The Mirage)" co-written with Quinn Johnson, and "Maybe I'm a Fool", co-written with Patrick Williams.
