Ilyas had been a leader of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) during his student days; the editor of the Urdu monthly magazine Afkar-e Milli for 28 years; a member of the national advisory committee of Jamaat-e Islami; working committee member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), and general secretary of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat.

When the Welfare Party of India was launched in 2011 as the political arm of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Ilyas was appointed as its general secretary. He is currently its national president.

Ilyas's son Umar Khalid came into national limelight for organising a protest at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, where anti-India slogans were raised and Khalid was charged with sedition in February 2016. He has since been released on bail.
