Syed Mohammad Ali (5 December 1928 – 1993) was a Bangladeshi journalist. He was the founder editor of the newspaper The Daily Star.

Early life
Ali was born to Syed Mostafa Ali, an official of the Assam Civil Service. Ali was a nephew of litterateur Syed Mujtaba Ali and Syed Murtaza Ali.
Career
Ali had a 44 year long journalist career. He started his career as a reporter with the Pakistan Observer.
Ali was the chairman of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB). He launched The Daily Star in 1991.
