History

The hotel opened on April 1, 2012. The reconstruction of the building started in 2010 at Dresden`s top location across from the famous Residence Castle with the Grünes Gewölbe (English: Green Vault), Armoury Museum, and the Turkish Chamber. After it was completely destroyed during World War II, the original historical building was never rebuilt and has remained an abandoned area since.

Architectural aspects

During the time of the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, Augustus the Strong (born 1670 in Dresden – died 1733 in Warsaw), the attendants of the Elector lived in the building next to the Residence Castle. Among the residents was the architect of Augustus the Strong, Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann (born 1662 in Herford – died 1736 in Dresden) and his family. The statue of Mr. Pöppelmann can be found above the hotel´s entrance as a memorial.

From 1821-1845 the building was a spiritual house and place of the Catholic Church in Saxony. Until the destruction of the building during a bomb attack in February 1945 during World War II, the building was the home of the choirboys of the Catholic Church. After the war, it remained an abandoned area until the reconstruction of the building started in 2008. In 2012, the building opened as Swissôtel Dresden Am Schloss and features 12 different historical facades – symbolizing 3 different architectural eras (Baroque, Renaissance, Modern).

Collaborations

Since April 2014, artist Andreas Jordi has featured exhibits in the hotel lobby, restaurant and bar. Since 2015 there is an exhibition of paintings from the German artist Doreen Wolff in the restaurant. From May until October 2016 in the Pöppelmann staircase Sandra Maier’s paintings are presented. Swissôtel Dresden Am Schloss collaborates with the SOS children’s village Zwickau. Furthermore the hotel is involved in several charity projects.
