History

Swaine Adeney was founded in 1750 in St James' London. The first Royal Warrant was granted by King George III for carriage riding whips. Then, in 1885 Thomas Brigg & Sons were appointed umbrella makers to Queen Victoria. In 1943 Swaine Adeney merged with Brigg & Sons the Royal umbrella makers who were founded in 1836 at St James' Street London.

Awards

  • 1851 Swaine & Adeney awarded a first prize at the Great Exhibition, London
  • 1879 The firm G. & J. Zair (bought by Swaine & Adeney Ltd in 1927) wins first special prize for its whips at the Sydney International Exhibition
  • 1908 The firm Thomas Brigg & Sons (merged with Swaine & Adeney Ltd in 1943) wins the Grand Prix for umbrellas at the Franco-British Exhibition in Paris
