Suvarna Nalapat (born on May 6, 1946 at Punnayurkulam in Kerala) is a historian .Founder President of Dr Suvarna Nalapat Trust for Education and Research.¹

The first ever woman to do a commentary and comparative study of Vedanthic Prasthanathraya,the highest philosophy of India ( Bhagavad Gita,12 Upanishads, Brahmasuthra)and Srividya Prasthanathraya (Lalithasahasranamam, Kundalini and srichakra in Varivasyarahasyam and Bhavana Upanishads).
The first person to create a 72 Melakartha Raga in Malayalam Musical repertoire and to experiment with it in Medical Music Therapy for integrating healthcare .²

Parents and family :-

K.G.Karunakaramenon,erstwhile Congress leader of the Undivided Indian National Congress Party and member of Legislative Assembly of Kerala is her father. Nalapat Ammini Amma is her mother. .Born in Nalapat family⁵ as the grand-niece of philosopher poet Nalapat Narayana Menon,⁶and brought up by him and his sister Nalapat Kochu Amma alias Kallianikutty. Nalapat Narayana menon is her Guru in Philosophy, Kochu Amma in Krishnabhakthi and her parents are her guides and philosophers in social service. Nalapat Balamani Amma⁷ is her mother’s sister and Kamala Das⁸ and Dr Sulochana Nalapat are her cousins. Balamani Amma has groomed her into poetry. Husband Dr K A Udayabhanu . Son Abilash is a sports journalist. M.D Nalapat is her nephew.

First Publications:-

Her first published poem was at age 8 years (1954) on Death of Nalapat Narayana Menon, in Mathrubhumi Balapamkthi (children’s page). Her first published prose appeared in the same column ( at age 14) and it was an appreciation and criticism on the first Novel of Sri M T Vasudevan Nair,the Jnanapitam awardee^. This happens to be the first ever criticism and appreciation written on MT Vasudevan Nair, and in that Suvarna had predicted that MT will become a great legend in Literature.(At age 14, this prediction seems to be a sign of her literary talents).As an adult her first published poem appeared in Mathrubhumi in 1964 when Prime Minister Nehru passed away (In Nehru special) and her first prose appered on Advaitha philosophy in Anadi,a spiritual magazine published by Erkara Raman Nambuthiri for promoting Vedic culture of India. Her first book (Thamarappookkal,Lotus Flowers 1957) is a collection of poems written from 1954-1957 (8–11 years) .Written by a child, this very early work shows her philosophical turn of mind in many poems.

Education:-

Schooling at RamaRaja Memorial Primary school, Vannery High school Punnayurkulam. Graduated from Kerala University ( BSc Zoology and Botany )at Little Flower College for women Guruvayur in 1964. In 1965 joined Calicut Medical college and completed MBBS and MD in Pathology (Calicut University).

Professional career:-

From 1972 to 2004 worked as a Medical Teacher in various Medical colleges under the Government of Kerala and retired as Professor of Pathology and Head of Department from Amrita Institute of Medical sciences at Kochin in 2004. .Was instrumental in toning up the administration in the Blood bank and Immunohematology center of Calicut Medical college from 1990- 1993 through ZOPP(Ziel-oriented Project Planning) and Indian Ethos in Management as envisaged in the Bhagavad Gita. .Was President of Kerala Blood Donor’s Forum of Calicut Medical College from 1990-1993. At this time submitted a plan for Regional Blood Bank for North Kerala based on the Glasgow Model with modern facilities including Mobile Units. This was submitted to Government in the 1990s and approved 14–16 years later.

Introduced a curriculum for of Human values in Healthcare, a programme for community-based integrated family healthcare through Music Therapy and experimented with it at Amritha Institute of Medical sciences from 2000-2004.⁹ Through an innovative programme of 72 Melakartha Ragas integrated Ayurveda, Yoga,Music and Astronomy with the Astronomy of ancient India. Creation of 72 Melakartha Ragas in Malayalam was done for this purpose. Had been a member of PathoIndia online Telepathology Group and actively participated in the discussion groups of UNIBAS (University of Basel,Switzerland Telepathology Group )until 2006. Founder President of Dr Suvarna Nalapat Trust for Education and Research, a Charitable Trust for promoting Education and Research.

The concept of a Medical University was published in Madhyamam daily in 2001 .

Faculty Training for Music Therapy ( for candidates holding MA Music )was conducted at John Mathai center for Music and Drama (of Calicut University), the first of its kind in Kerala, and the students were given practical research training in Calicut Medical college ICU and Dialysis units by the respective departments . Proposal for establishing a chair for Music and Music Therapy was submitted to MG University Kottayam and lectures conducted in the Uty for promoting the cause. Associated with the Music Therapy training programmes and PG Diploma course development (with curriculum,syllabus planning) of center for Adult continuing Education (CACEE) of Kerala University from its inception.

The revolutionary changes in healthcare should start from food and nutrition to build up immunity .In her early career, the experience with children affected with Leaukemia and Anaemia, most of them having nutritional deficiency, lead her to a comprehensive plan to improve the food sufficiency of India rather than spending money on treatment and on superspeciality hospitals.The idea of adopting Health Villages and the improvement of self-sufficiency of food production in each family,and village occurred to her as a preventive measure for many of the problems faced by the Nation in the healthcare and economic sectors. A research in Kol fields of Kerala(South Malabar) was conducted with this aim and solutions for production and effective use of food suggested . ¹⁰ The integrated Healthcare programme with Music Therapy playing a key role also was its outcome.

The discovery of cupolas (cupmarkings) of 40000 years on rock surface of Muthalamada, and statue of Alexander on the wall of Thriprayar Sree Ramaswamy temple were real breakthroughs in the historical research.

Ultimately every research is a re-search for peaceful living on earth. For achieving world peace and peaceful co-existence a valuebased living and educational pursuits, comparative study and a Mahaa Advaita (Grand Unification)¹¹ of everything (including all living and nonliving beings, all knowledge systems,philosophies, sciences and arts) is needed. The entire life was spent on this pursuit for achieving wisdom and re-discovering it from the ancient human mind and consciousness.

Telepathology:Pathology at Crossroads :An invited Lecture on " The need for Introducing Telepathology in India with a demonstration of how pathologists can use Image transfer in diagnosis" was given at the 42nd Kerala Chapter of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists (IAPM) at Trichur, Kerala, in October 1998. This was the first of its kind in Kerala and probably in India.Following this, IAPM chapter made a resolution to introduce Telepathology and image transfer for Diagnosis in all the Medical colleges of Kerala.

Apart from being an administrator,Medical teacher and researcher Dr Suvarna Nalapat has a multifaceted personality which spans into various fields of activity and her contributions in Literature,Philosophy, Music Therapy,history and social sciences .
