With the presence of Alan Knott in the Kent side, Waterton found his opportunities limited at Kent. He left Kent at the end of the 1985 season, joining Northamptonshire for the 1986 season.

His highest score for Northamptonshire, which was one of two first-class fifties he made for the county, came against Worcestershire in the 1986 County Championship. His first List A appearance for Northamptonshire came against the touring Zimbabweans in 1986. He made 11 further List A appearances for Northamptonshire, the last of which came against Essex in the 1986 John Player League. In his 12 List A matches for the county, he scored 44 runs at an average of 14.66, with a high score of 28. Behind the stumps he took 7 catches and made 4 stumpings. He left Northamptonshire at the end of the 1987 season.

He later proceeded to join Oxfordshire in 1989, making his debut for the county against Berkshire in the MCCA Knockout Trophy. That same season he played his first List A match for the county against Gloucestershire in the NatWest Trophy. The following season he played a single first-class match for Lancashire in the 1990 County Championship against Nottinghamshire. He played no further matches for Lancashire and returned to playing Minor counties cricket for Oxfordshire. 1990 also saw him play his first List A match for the Minor Counties against Middlesex in the Benson & Hedges Cup. He made 4 further List A appearances for the Minor Counties, that last of which came in the 1992 Benson & Hedges Cup. He also made 3 further List A appearances for Oxfordshire, the last of which came against Somerset in the 1994 NatWest Trophy. This included his highest List A score, 92 against Gloucestershire in the 1989 NatWest Trophy. He continued to play Minor counties cricket for Oxfordshire until 1997, making a total of 60 Minor Counties Championship appearances and 15 MCCA Knockout Trophy appearances.
