Stuart Alexander McNichol was born to Peter McNichol and Wendy Hatton on June 17, 1985, in South Shields, United Kingdom. His mother Wendy Hatton had a fraternal twin named Stuart Hatton, so when Stuart McNichol started using the last name Hatton, he was often referred to as Stuart Hatton, Jr. to avoid confusion with his uncle. Both of his parents were dance teachers who owned their own studio, and Hatton started dancing at 13 months. He also has a brother named James Hatton. Stuart attended St Wilfrid's RC College for high school, graduating in 2001, followed by attending South Tyneside College and Newcastle University. In 2014, Hatton was crowned Mr. Gay UK once again for the second consecutive year. From there, he went on to win the Mr Gay World 2014 competition. The competition had delegates from 32 countries, with the 1st Runner-up being Kiriakos Spanos from Cyprus. The criteria was more than a beauty pageant; he was tested on his knowledge of gay history and LGBT politics in a written exam and had to perform interviews on a variety of subjects. On winning the crown, Hatton stated, "I am now able to use my voice to help those in countries around the world who have no voice or equality rights, such as people in Malaysia and Iran. We are all human, and all gay people around the world deserve the same human rights. This is just the beginning."

During the Mr. Gay World competition, Hatton went against Mr. Gay India's Sushant Divgikar, who Hatton stated "was such an amazing guy. He kept me entertained throughout the whole competition in Rome. He is a talented singer, an amazing dancer, he is such a comedian in his spare time and he has such a beautiful soul."

Modeling

In an interview, Hatton stated that he was inspired to get involved with modeling after seeing UK soccer star and model David Beckham during a time when "every boy in the UK copied what Beckham did with his hair." He has modeled for underwear companies and been featured on the cover of multiple magazines.

Hatton was picked up for a contract with Ubisoft, appearing in their Just Dance 4 game for Xbox commercial.

In 2015, he joined with Strictly Come Dancing’s Callum MacDonald "for a special same-sex advertising campaign for the world’s leading specialists in dance footwear, Freed of London." The two were criticized by Strictly's James Jordan who stated, "If there is a same sex couple dancing… it would be a joke. People wouldn’t take it seriously. It would have to be a comedy value." Hatton accused the latter of homophobia and stated he would not longer support Jordan, his shows, or his tours "ever again."

As an underwear model, Hatton has modeled for Bruno Banani, DeadGoodUndies, Mundo Unico, and many other brands.

So what?

Hatton launched his "So what?" campaign on January 11, 2015 from South Shields, UK. The campaign has an anti-bullying and homophobia awareness platform with people writing "So what?" on their hands and posting their photos to social media. The official slogan of the campaign is: "Some of us have blue eyes, some of us have green eyes. Some of us are straight. Some of us are gay... So what?" The campaign was supported by The Shields Gazette, Alfie Joey, Jonathan Miles, Lorraine Kelly, the cast of Coronation Street, and international Twitter users who used the hashtag #SoWhat.
