Geography

Strmendolac is located at the Karst Plateau, 4 kilometers east of Trilj. The village can be reached by road from the south from Čaporice, from the southeast, from the direction of Ugljane and the main road from Trilj.The village is surrounded by mountains on all sides so that they only have the two directions that are found in the fissures of these hills.Through village runs a multitude of streams that are bringing together in a large one,called Krolin potok.The village is rich in natural drinking water and as such has 18 sources . Because of its karst topography in its area has plenty of karst formations such as caves , sinkholes , cracks, ... Cave Garepuša which is considered one of the largest cave in the area ofStrmendolac has a diameter about 4,5M.about 30 years ago in that hole is inserted colors , the same colors appeared on the source of the river Grab.In Strmendolac there are two types of forests , deciduous made of elm , ash and oak trees and newly planted coniferous forest mostly made of pine and spruce .

Population

The natives are Croats, who make up the majority of the population. A majority of the population identified themselves as members of the Roman Catholic Church.

History

Strmendolac was settled in the Illyrian era, as documented by ruins and monuments. During the arrival of the Ottomans, rural resistance was crushed. The most interesting part for archaeologists are seven-foot crosses. The church of St. Nicholas was built in 1767. During World War II Strmendolac and the surrounding villages were shelled by the Italian army. Villagers hid in ˝bunkers˝ that they had made at the beginning of the war. At the end of the war the villagers hid their weapons in the hills.And today people walk with caution in the woods because there are many places where can be found weapons. The Turks conquered that territory and rule lasted almost two hundred godina.in the early 16th century most villages around Kamešnica in the first years of Venetian rule have been installed based in Herzegovina, and so were some Muslims converted to Christian side.After 1691 He remained in Turkish hands since he was on the left side of the river Cetine.but, Požarevačka threaty peace concluded in 1718, a new military coup Kamešnica pulled him from the Turkish authorities and is also completely free. In 1732, became part of the newly established parish Ugljane and the parish church during the reorganization. Venetian rule in 1797, was torn and Austrian troops marched into the hinterland of Dalmatia. 1806 was ruled by the French, but in 1813 again remained in the hands of the Austrians after the defeat of Napoleon at Leipzig. The village has 173 inhabitants in 1857, 225 inhabitants in 1910. In 1918, the new Serbian-Croatian-Slovenian state, and then became part of the first Jugoslavije.after during the war was not under anyone's authority as well as the nearby villages.there were common italians military shelling attacks on him but because of dished form no army did not dare enter it for fear of ambush .After the war he was in socialist Yugoslavia. Since 1991, it belongs to the independent Croatia. Since the 1990s, the population has the beginnings of a constant decline. In 2011, the village has 221 resident

Sport

In Strmendolac "Rural Olympics" were held on 1 May. According to some data, some 2000 people attended. Games and competitions included football, archery and shooting .
