Mission

SEI's mission is to "support decision-making and induce change towards sustainable development around the world by providing integrative knowledge that bridges science and policy in the field of environment and development."

Activities

SEI works on climate change, energy systems, water resources, air quality, land-use, sanitation, food security, and trade issues with the aim to shift policy and practice towards sustainability.

SEI is also commissioned to write reports by third parties.

    SEI is registered in Sweden as a foundation (STIFT THE STOCKHOLM ENVIRONMENT INSTITUTE, SEI) and is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Government of Sweden for terms of four years. The SEI board was first established on 21 June 1989

  • Managing environmental systems - this includes sustainable urbanization which in turn includes work at the city scale on water resources, sanitation, climate, and sustainable lifestyles

  • In addition to these four themes, there is also a China Cluster which operates at a research programme level and is focused on sustainability issues in China

    History

    SEI was established in 1989 as an initiative of the Government of Sweden. The name of the Stockholm Environment Institute is derived from the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm.
