Ungerleider is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. He holds the PhD from the University of Oregon. As an undergraduate, he competed in gymnastics for Texas.

Ungerleider's documentary film, Munich 1972 & Beyond, is scheduled for release in 2016.
