Steven Neil Durlauf (born August 12, 1958) is an American economist known for his research into income inequality and poverty. He is the William F. Vilas Research Professor and Kenneth J. Arrow Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Education

Durlauf received his B.A. from Harvard University in economics in 1980, and his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1986, also in economics.

Honors, awards and positions

Durlauf received the Vilas Professorship in 2011 and the Laurits R. Christensen Professorship in 2009. He has been a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2011. Since 1997, he has also been a fellow of the Econometric Society. He is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Economic Literature.
