Steve McCharles (born September 25, 1963) is a Canadian ice hockey coach, most notable as the former head coach of the Temiscaming Royals of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) . He has also previously served as former assistant coach of the North Bay Skyhawks of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) and was also head coach of the Nipissing Alouettes of the Greater Metro Junior Hockey League (GMHL).

Playing career
Born in North Bay, Ontario, McCharles played with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for three years, where he was awarded the "Most Improved Player" in his first season. He then finished his junior career with the Orillia Travelways of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), where he was part of a Centennial Cup winning team.
After some time in the International Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League, McCharles then saw his playing career move to Europe, where he spent three years in Sweden. Steve returned to North America the following year and spent the following three seasons in the UHL playing for the Brantford Smoke, and the St. Thomas Wildcats. McCharles' playing career ended with the Nikko Ice Bucks of the Japanese Elite Hockey League.
Coaching career
McCharles' first coaching position was an Assistant coach with the Paris Mounties Jr. "C" Hockey Club. While in Nikko, Steve also worked as an assistant coach, under head coach Randy Edmonds. After a short lay-off from hockey, Steve then became an assistant coach with the Augsburger Panther of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) in Germany, again under head coach Randy Edmonds, where he had the opportunity to coach and coach against many ex NHLer's, such as Trevor Kidd, Todd Warriner, James Patrick and many, many more.
McCharles then became the defence coach of the North Bay Skyhawks for a season, where he developed players such as Ken Peroff now with the Brampton Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Quinn Waller of the 2007 Royal Bank Cup Champion Aurora Tigers (Full US Division 1 Scholarship), and John Ryan with the Windsor Lancers of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA), before moving on to becoming the Nipissing Alouettes genereal manager and head coach.
Three of Steve's players from Nipissing, have been offered US college scholarships and one will see play at the professional level, next season.
On Friday, January 21, 2011, Steve McCharles stepped down as head coach and general manager of the Temiscaming Royals. McCharles posted a 77-86-13 record during his time with the Temiscaming Royals from 2007 to the midway point of the 2010-11 season.
