Taxonomy

The genus was erected by E. L. Holmberg in 1881, with the type species Stenoterommata platensis. Holmberg explained that the genus name referred to the fact that the posterior eyes of the species were narrower than any other species in Argentina. The name Stenoterommata is a Latinized form of stenoterommatos, an adjective derived from Greek, meaning "narrower eyed", and is feminine, as it implicitly modifies aranea, "spider".
