Professional career

He started his career at his father's last team, Juvecaserta Basket in Legadue before going to Andrea Costa Imola of the same division where Ferdinando was coach.

There he caught the eye of Serie A side Armani Jeans Milano in which his father had been a star player, he discovered not only the first division but also the EuroLeague.

However he struggled to get any meaningful playing time and dropped down to the third division, first with Assi Ostuni then Aquila Basket Trento. After a good season with the latter team in which they won promotion to Legadue he reentered the top division with Junior Casale before joining former team Juvecaserta Basket also in Serie A.
At Caserta he flourished under coach Stefano Sacripanti, earning a call up for the 2012 All star game, where he played alongside his brother Alessandro and was awarded MVP. When coach Sacripanti moved to ambitious club Pallacanestro Cantù he quickly recruited Gentile. He contributed to the team's good season, finishing 3rd in the league and reaching the last 32 of Europe's second tier Eurocup.
In July 2015, he joined Pallacanestro Reggiana, signing a two-year contract.
In April 2017 he became a player of Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna.
International career
After playing for the under age categories of the Italian national basketball team he dropped off the radar until 2012 where he made his debut for the senior side. From 2014 he began playing regularly for the team in FIBA EuroBasket 2015 qualification in which they qualified for EuroBasket 2015.
Personal life
He is the son of Italian basketball icon Ferdinando Gentile moving around Italy and Europe in his wake, playing for the youth team of Panathinaikos while his father played there. His younger brother is Emporio Armani Milano player Alessandro Gentile with whom he plays for Italy.
