Fournier was selected by the Acadie–Bathurst Titan in the first round (17th overall) of the 2008 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) Entry Draft. He went on to play five seasons (2008–2013) in the QMJHL, scoring 101 goals and 111 assists for 212 points, while earning 337 penalty minutes, in 289 games played. In his final year of major junior hockey, during the 2013 QMJHL playoffs, Fournier scored 16 goals to lead all players as he co-captained the Halifax Mooseheads to capture both the QMJHL championship and the 2013 Memorial Cup.

On July 6, 2013, the Montreal Canadiens signed Fournier as an undrafted free agent to a three-year entry-level contract. He was assigned to play the 2013–14 season with Montreal's AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs, where he scored two goals and five assists, while earning 86 penalty minutes, in 40 games played. He also played one game in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers.

On January 15, 2016, he was included in a trade by the Montreal Canadiens, alongside Jarred Tinordi, to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Victor Bartley and John Scott.
In the following 2016–17 season, while with the Coyotes inaugural AHL affiliate the Tucson Roadrunners, Fournier was traded by Arizona to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Jeremy Morin on February 25, 2017.
