In ice hockey, a stay-at-home defenceman is one who plays a very defensive-minded game. The player often has limited offensive skills and thus does not rack up many goals or assists. However, a stay-at-home defenceman provides value to his team with his ability to ease pressure on the goaltender in defensive situations. These players usually play with a more physical style and are often used to neutralize the opposing team's offensive players by landing strong hits and blocking shots.
