    Horizon House

Geelong is home to one of nine houses operated by St John of God Health Care in Victoria and Western Australia. The Horizon House program provides long-term housing and support to young homeless people.

In 2010, St John of God Geelong Hospital was awarded Catholic Health Australia’s 2nd Annual “Outreach Healthcare Award” for the Horizon House program.

    1965: Construction and Opening

The four-level, 80-bed facility opened under the name Holy Cross Hospital in 1965, administered by the RC Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Construction and equipment cost A₤750,000 (A$1.5m), the building designed by Buchan, Laird & Buchan (now the Buchan Group – a multinational architecture firm which originated in Geelong). The original configuration featured medical, surgical, obstetric and paediatric departments.

    1974: Change of management

In 1974, due to financial and administrative difficulties faced by the MSC order, the hospital was to be sold. The local RC church acted to keep it by inviting another order, the Sisters of St John of God to take over its administration. The name of the hospital was not changed at this time, remaining as Holy Cross.

1986: Change of name, and first major redevelopment

The hospital was officially renamed St John of God Hospital in 1986, at the same time as the first major extension and redevelopment was unveiled. The first real building improvements since 1965, this work helped to substantially modernise the facility.

    1998: Second major redevelopment

The hospital expanded vertically in 1998 with two additional floors. Further improvements and a state of the art imaging facility were also added.
