Profiles

St. Gregory's Catholic School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. The school was founded in 1966.

Contents

Often shortened to St. Greg's, the school consistently produces sound GCSE results and regularly appears in the TES Top 200 state schools league table. The school has been redeveloped numerous times in recent years, with the new Sixth Form block which is the most notable addition to the infrastructure of the school.

St Gregory's has a strong relationship with Catholic primary schools in the surrounding area, most notably St Augustine's Catholic Primary School from whom a large number of pupils come.

Areas of Learning

The school is arranged into 5 Areas of Learning (AoL). Students are assigned to an Area of Learning and they will stay in this Area for all of their school career - developing a strong supportive relationship with their peers and the team of teachers in their Area. If the student has a good reason to move review group, or even AoL, they can.

Family members may be put into the same Area of Learning but not necessarily the same Review Group. The Areas of Learning are led by an Assistant Headteacher, supported by a Pastoral leader.

In year 7 students are taught in mixed-ability groups for most subjects - called by a Saints name (Anna, Clare, Joan, Helen, Luke, Peter, Simon). Anna, Clare, Joan and Helen learning French and Luke, Peter and Simon learning Spanish. Anna and Luke are also the 2 grammar-streaming groups. At the end of each day, students have 25 minutes Review Time, with their Review Tutor, in mixed age "vertical" Review Groups. This is to encourage students to reflect on their personal learning in a family environment.

Sixth form

The Sixth Form at St Gregory's is regarded as the most influential and responsible part of the school. All of the Year 12 students are deemed to be "Prefects", with some of them, through application and interview procedures made "Senior Prefects". The choice of post-16 education can be of ultimate importance and so we will do our utmost to provide the mixture of courses that best meets the needs of the individual. Students can take a mixture of 'AS' and AVCEs in year 12 in order to maximise opportunities for progression. Some students may choose to follow an intermediate VCE in year 12 with a view to taking up advanced courses later.

A range of options are available in the Sixth Form, including A level GCE, Applied A levels and B Tech qualifications. This also includes a Media and Film department run by Mr F "Frankie" Bohacek.

Alumni

Notable alumni include:

  • Chris White, Member of Parliament for Warwick and Leamington since the 2010 general election.
