It was founded in early 11th century by Sorbs, refugees from Germany after a military campaign of Henry II. In 2005, it had 206 inhabitants. There is a baroque church from the 18th century and an open-air museum of Czechoslovak fortifications from 1938.

On 27 January 1972, Serbian stewardess Vesna Vulović was the only person on board to survive the crash of JAT Yugoslav Flight 364 which exploded 10,160 meters (33,000 ft) above Srbská Kamenice. This won her an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. She visited the village again on the 30th anniversary in 2002. A local boarding house is named after her (Pension Vesna).
