History

Excavation of the Square One site began in 1969. Construction was finished in 1973, where the mall was first opened to the public. The three original anchors included Woolco, Sears and The Bay

During the 1980s, the mall underwent numerous expansions; with the addition of 80 more stores and over a million square feet to the property, Dominion closing for additional mall space, the removal of the Open Air Court to make way for the current food court, and a new Eaton's department store.

On 1994, Walmart acquired most of the leases of Woolco stores - except for downtown and unionized locations - and that included the Square One location of Woolco. In the same year, this space was converted into a Walmart (stylized as WAL-MART at that time).

Some stores such as Ashbrook's and Mark and Spencer were closed in the late 1990s order to make way for the Cityside expansion, which was completed in the early 2000s.

On 1999, Eaton's filled for bankruptcy, closing their location at Square One. Zellers took over the space in 2000.

Between 2000 and 2003, a new expansion termed Cityside was completed. This latest expansion added 320,000 square feet (30,000 m2) of retail space to the mall, and an additional 370,000 square feet (34,000 m2) for parking. New stores opened included Old Navy, Home Outfitters and Tommy Hilfiger. A new Cineplex Odeon movie theatre was also opened. In 2005, the theatre was bought by the Empire Theatres chain. Cineplex sold the theatre to comply with competition laws following Cineplex's buy-out of the Famous Players theatre chain.

During the summer of 2009, work began on the next phase of development. The north-east parking lot, behind Walmart was converted into a series of box stores with a reduced amount of parking, including a Whole Foods Market, Crate & Barrel, Boston Pizza, an unnamed restaurant and two still unassigned stores.

During January 2011, Target acquired the leases of most Zellers stores, including their location at Square One. Zellers closed in June 2012 and the store was renovated into a Target, which opened to the public on March 30th, 2013.

On June 2011, a major renovation occurred at the Walmart location, with the intention to convert it into a Supercentre; the remodelling process was completed around late 2011. Aisles such as entertainment and cosmetics were moved in order to make way for the produce section. Two elevators were also added.

On January 2013, Square One started a major renovation on the main corridor from the Target store to the centre court/food court. Burger King and Bowring were forced to move due to the expansion of the food court across from the existing food court. The scenic elevator, along with the fountain, were removed and replaced with two escalators. This renovation was completed during the Fall of 2013. Square One also expanded by adding its concept, Grand Centre Court, which added at least (220,000 sq ft (20,439 m2)) square feet extra.

Sears Canada announced on June 14, 2013 that it will be closing its store at Square One and Yorkdale as of March 9, 2014.

On June 27, 2013, Empire Theatres announced that they will be selling their theatre at Square One to Landmark Cinemas. On October 29, 2013, Empire Theatres closed and reopened as Landmark Cinemas on October 31, 2013.

Food Central opened to the public in October 2013. Compared to the previous food court, the decor is fancy and luxurious; new chairs, stools, and couches were added. In addition, new restaurants like Amaya, Burger King, Chipotle, Su & Shi, Big Smoke Burger, Shanghai 360, Culture and Schezuan Express were added.

It was announced on December 6, 2013 that La Maison Simons will take over most of the space occupied by Sears, with a flagship store which opened in Spring 2016.

During September 2014, Square One completed its Northwest Expansion, adding stores/restaurants such as Old Navy, Shoppers Drug Mart, Aroma's Expresso Bar and Moxie's Grill and Bar.

Around early October, Landmark Cinemas announced that it would not be renewing its lease with the mall and that the theater itself would be closing on October 3, 2014. Currently, there is nothing occupying the vacant area.

On January 2015, Target announced that it would close all their stores, including their location at Square One. Target's location at Square One closed April 2015. A month later, an experiment created by Toyata (Towards Tomorrow) temporarily occupied the former Target and lasted about 3 months (March 5 - May 31, 2016). Currently, a huge gap of unused space is left due to Target's departure.

Construction also occurred during late 2015, closing down the large Dollarama store, (now relocated next to Flight Centre) as well as Home Outfitters in Square One's underground floor, to make way for Holt Renfrew and the South Expansion. Due to this, Old Navy was relocated to the Northwest Expansion.

The South Expansion was completed in the summer of 2016, adding new retailers such as Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen, Ben Sherman, Papyrus, Club Monacco, and Rolex.
