History

The line was founded by Shereen Sabet, who was working as a microbiologist at the California State University at Long Beach, in order for her to stay within the Muslim dress code and be able to scuba dive or swim in public. The line was also intended to provide swimwear in line with the edicts of other religions, in addition to coverage for those concerned about skin exposure for other reasons. The original Splashgear model was created in a floral Hawaiian print, which covered the wearer from the ankles and wrists to the neck, with a swim hood. The company and website, SplashgearUSA.com, were founded in 2006. Soon afterwards the design moved to solid colors with an athletic stripe down the side. The corporate office is located in Huntington Beach and sells its clothing through its online store. The company’s slogan is “Now Go Get Wet”.

Swimwear

Each suit is UV-resistant and made of stretchable or woven material. It is designed so it can be used for both resting on the beach or during watersports like surfing. Splashgear provides two different styles of head coverings: a swim hood and a swim cap. There are two kinds of tops as well: the “island shirt” and the “resort shirt”, which is a longer tunic with a draw cord at the waist. The third part of the swim outfit are the label’s “resort pants”, which are long-form board pants. Alternatively, Splashgear produces a skirt-pants combination it calls “la femme”.
