Spire was created in 1934 by Edgar Archer, an employee of the Midland Cooperative Oil Association. Spire came to the attention of co-workers at the oil company, who applied for a certificate for Spire. Spire was officially incorporated on March 13, 1934. As of October 27, 2011, Spire operates ten branches in the Twin Cities area. In July 2014, Spire was voted to move from a federally chartered financial into state and renamed Spire Credit Union.
