South San Francisco is a Bay Area Rapid Transit station located in suburban South San Francisco, California in northern San Mateo County. It consists of two main tracks and a shared underground island platform.

Station layout

Service at the station began on June 22, 2003, as part of the BART San Mateo County Extension project that extended BART service southward from Colma to Millbrae and San Francisco International Airport.

El Camino High School is located near the station along the opposite side of Mission Road, and Solaire Village, a 361-unit, mixed-use transit village that includes a Trader Joe's supermarket, is nearby. The station forms the current northern terminus of the Centennial Way Trail.

Transit connections

Several SamTrans bus lines serve the station, including:

  • 35 - school day only service before 8:00 am and after 3:00 pm to El Camino High School from western South San Francisco via Callan Boulevard, Gellert Boulevard, South San Francisco's Sierra Highlands neighborhood, Hickey Boulevard, and El Camino Real. This route's terminus is on Evergreen Avenue, directly across the street from the BART station.
  • 122 - daily local service to Stonestown Mall (San Francisco) via Kaiser Hospital, Westborough Shopping Center, King Plaza Shopping Center, Serramonte Shopping Center, Serra Center, Seton Medical Center, Colma BART, Westlake Shopping Center (Daly City), Daly City BART, and San Francisco State University. 122 arrives and departs on the west busway of the station.
  • 131 - weekdays and Saturdays local service to Serramonte Shopping Center (northbound) and Airport & Linden (South San Francisco, southbound) via Hickey Blvd, South San Francisco BART, Grand Avenue through downtown South San Francisco, and, indirectly, South San Francisco Caltrain. The 131 arrives on the west busway of the station.
  • ECR (New Palo Alto to Daly City BART bus line) - daily local service along the El Camino Real corridor to Daly City BART (northbound) and Palo Alto Caltrain (southbound). ECR has two stops to the North and South of the BART station on El Camino Real, a block away from the station.
  • South City Shuttle
  • Note SamTrans bus lines 390 and 391 are no longer in service as of August 11, 2013. These two lines were consolidated into the new ECR line.
  • Note SamTrans bus lines 133 and 132 are no longer in service as of January 26, 2014. Route 133 was consolidated with the South San Francisco portion of the 130 route and the Daly City portion of the 133 route. Route 130 now terminates at Colma BART station from Daly City BART.

    • Several Alliance local shuttle routes supplement eliminated service areas and connect the commercial areas of South San Francisco with BART, the Bay Ferry, and Caltrain. These shuttles arrive and depart from the east busway of the station:

  • Utah/Grand - connects South San Francisco BART with commercial offices in the eastern side of the city. Serviced companies include Genentech Inc., Nippon Express USA Inc., Portola Pharmaceuticals, San Pacific International Inc., SSF Conference Center, and more. [1]
  • Oyster Point - connects South San Francisco BART with commercial offices in the eastern side of the city. Serviced companies include Apria Healthcare, Permanente Medical Group, Sanrio Inc., and more. [2]
