South Oldham High School is located in Crestwood, Kentucky and serves pupils in 9th-12th grade. The school's principal is Jeff Griffin. Griffin was elected by the SBDM Council as South Oldham's new principal after Dorenda Neihof resigned and took over Oldham County Schools Chief Operating Officer. The school's mascot is the Dragon, which is green to reflect the school colors of green and gray, as well as navy and white for accent colors. South Oldham opened in 1989 because Oldham County High School had become overcrowded.

Academics

  • The school annually sends several students to the Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program and the Kentucky Governor's School For The Arts.
  • The Draconium, the student-run yearbook, and The Dragon's Tale, the student-run newspaper, have won numerous Kentucky High School Journalism Association (KHSJA) awards under the direction of their adviser Cindi Reedy.
  • The school's Advanced Placement BC Calculus Course, taught by Larry McCloskey, regularly has 100% of its students score a 3 (passing) or better on the exam.

    SOHS was included in the 2009 Silver Award list of US News & World Report.

    SOHS made the top 1500 (number 753) high schools on Newsweek magazine's 2009 list of the top US high schools. This ranking put them in the top 6% of the public high schools in the nation.

    South Oldham High School was named as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence 13 years ago.

    SOHS met 10 of 10 target goals in the 2008 Yearly Progress Report for "No Child Left Behind".

    In 2010, the journalism program at SOHS was awarded Grand Champion at the yearly Kentucky High School Journalism Association (KHSJA) convention for the second year in a row. The yearbook (The Draconium), the newspaper (The Dragon's Tale) and the broadcast journalism classes all took first place in the AAA division that year. This makes SOHS's journalism program the best high school journalism program in the state of Kentucky. The 2010 contest marked SOHS' fourth Grand Champion award in five years (2006, 2007, and 2009).

    Athletics

  • The girls' soccer team has won 7 (1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2014) Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) championships under head coach Cy Tucker. The girls' soccer team has also produced three consecutive Miss Soccer award winners: Jennifer Gibson (1999), Kristal Menard (2000), and Emily Cobb (2001).
  • The boys' cross country team won the 2001 KHSAA AAA team championship in 2000 under head coach Houston Barber. The boys' cross country team won the 2009 KHSAA AA team championship under head coach Stan Clark. The girls' cross country team won both the 2008 and 2009 KHSAA AA team championships, also under coach Stan Clark, The boys' team won the KHSAA AAA state championship in 2014 and were runner up in 2015.
  • Cole and Tanner Dowdy were members of the 2014 Cross Country State Championship team and Tanner finished 2nd and Cole Finish 4th and later in their junior year during track Cole won the 3200m (2 mile) and Tanner came in 4th, then in their Senior year Cole won the Cross Country State Championship Individually and Tanner Finished 3rd, then in the 3200m during Track Tanner won and Cole came in 4th.
  • Alli Sauer won the KHSAA AAA individual cross country championship in 1999.
  • The wrestling team has produced several individual state champions, including Derek Scott 2x, Taylor Scherer 3x, Daniel Murner X1, Steve Lovewell x1, and Nick Fiser x1. Scott, Scherer, Lovewell and Fiser were all members of the 2003 State Championship Team which set the state record for number of team points at State Tournament with 257.5 total points, which still holds today. Head coach Steve Fiser was named Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2003 as well. The 2002 team placed 3rd in State. State finalists include Adam Brown (HWT) 2010, Ryan Houchens (189) 2008, Alan Oliver (125) 2003, Mark Shaver (119) 2001 and (125) 2002 and Billy Whitehouse (130) 2002 and 2003.
  • Megan Bollinger won the KHSAA girls' individual tennis championship in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
  • SOHS Athletic Director, Mitchell Irvin, was selected as one of eight finalists for the National School Athletic Director of the Year in February 2009. Irvin was inducted into the Louisville Metro Area Athletic Directors Hall of Fame in November, 2009.
  • The boys' basketball program has seen repeated success. Coach Steven Simpson has received multiple honors.
